Case Study 3
The Swim Platform

The premise of this case study was to find the nastiest teak swim platform available and refinish half to demonstrate what can be done with just a little effort. This platform was found on the back of a wrecked boat that had been in the junk yard for 5 or 10 years. I unbolted it and brought it home to work on.

The entire right side was cleaned with a power washer. It took off most of the mold and really bad stuff but the wood was still very dark and very rough from the effects of the mold. The top board was only power washed. No sanding, bronze wool or cleaner was used.

Close-up of the un-washed wood on the left side of the piece.

Notice that there is not only grayed teak oil and wood but green mold growing just above the coin. The mold was on both sides of the platform before cleaning.

Just power washing cleaned the teak of mold and debris but did not remove the brown spot in the right side. This spot was the original varnish finish that was under the stainless steel hinge bracket for the fold down step.

Notice the depth of the erosion from the mold.

This is the transition between the un-power washed section on the left and the power washed section on the right.

The washing removed nearly all of the mold and other contamination on the wood, but the color indicates that there is still plenty of dead wood and oxidized teak oil still there.

This is the transition from power washed on the far left, teak cleaner cleaned on the near left and 3 coats of TeakGuard Finish on the right.

Notice the amount of grain showing.  This area was sanded to smooth the surface and then buffed with bronze wool, teak cleaner, and rinsed with fresh water to remove the teak oil and other residue so that the TeakGuard Finish would bond with the wood properly.  Even with the rough surface, it is still fairly shiny but not at all slippery.

This area was sanded with a medium grit 3M sanding sponge just enough to remove the teak oil and other residue so that the TeakGuard Finish would bond with the wood properly.

Notice the amount of grain still showing.

The area to the left of the coin has 3 coats, the right has 6 thin coats of TeakGuard Finish

The area to the left of the coin had 3, the right has 6 coats of TeakGuard. And even with 6 coats, the grain is clearly visible.

This area started out just as rough as the other boards, but it was lightly sanded with a 3" belt sander with 80 grit paper. After sanding the area was cleaned with teak cleaner and bronze wool then rinsed with fresh water and allowed to dry before finishing with TeakGuard Finish.

This is the end grain of the second and third boards. The one on the right was belt sanded the left was hand sanded, both were cleaned with teak cleaner and bronze wool and rinsed. Both have 6 thin coats of TeakGuard Finish.

It contains no acid or base and requires almost no scrubbing. Spray it on, let it work for 1 minute and brush the gray teak oil, and most other debris off you teak. Traditional TeakGuard Cleaner is a specially formulated cleaner containing oxalic acid that is designed to reduce the cleaning effort required to prepare the surface of teak furniture, teak bright work and decking for a long lasting TeakGuard finish. For years the only finish recommended by westminster teak USA. Better that any oil product, and lasts longer that any teak sealer product. I want to thank the chemist who developed TeaQua. I've always been a fan of oils that are IN not ON the wood and the ease of application, water clean up and the look are outstanding. I heard about TeakGuard from a fellow sailor on one of the forums I visit. I tried it out on teak patio furniture and a red oak bench I built. From that experience I deemed it worthy of being applied to the teak on my Cape Dory 25D, Seraph. What an understatement. I spent 4 weekends removing the Cetol and 1/2 day applying TeaQua. I didn't use one piece of masking tape. I simply cut it in like a trim painter and came behind with a wet rag to wipe up any teakguard that got on the gelcoat. Couldn't have been easier unless done by someone else. Teakguard has caused quite a stir at my marina. Everyone is watching and taking bets on how long it will last. Having watched my patio furniture for 6 months I'm very optimistic. There may be a few varnish types at my marina throwing in the brush and converting to Teakguard. Thanks again for a fine product.
