Safe Usage of TeakGuard Finish and Cleaner

TeakGuard Finish and Cleaner are water based products and therefore inherently safe and environmentally friendly. There is, however, need for some caution when using these products.

TeakGuard Super Cleaner is a very special mixture of degreases and detergent designed to soften, dissolve and remove the oily resin that saturates most hard oily woods like Teak, Cedar, and others. It will also dissolve and remove the oil in you skin. Extended exposure will cause you skin to become dry and cracked. Wear rubber gloves to protect you hands.

TeakGuard Oxalic Acid Cleaner is a weak crystalline acid dissolved in water. It is also a very aggressive cleaner that will clean the hard to dissolve oxidized teak oil and mold off your wood. It will also dissolve the natural oils in your skin. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection when using TeakGuard Cleaner! Additionally, TeakGuard Cleaner vapor may be irritating to your eyes, nose and throat so it is prudent to use it in a well ventilated area.

Rinsing the spent cleaner with fresh water while buffing the wood with bronze wool is very effective and very necessary. Leaving even very small amounts of spent cleaner on your wood will result in what appears to be large scale TeakGuard failure at some time in the future. It is actually the wood just under the TeakGuard that is failing due to acid deterioration. Do not use high pressure water during the rinse and buff operation. A low to moderate flow of water from a hose without a nozzle is quite sufficient and it will not splash you, your friends, and other parts of your boat, your furniture or yard that you do not want cleaned.

Additionally, new information has become available that indicates that using strong cleaners like TeakGuard Oxalic Acid Cleaner, TSP, phosphoric acid, sodium hydroxide, chlorine bleach among others may break down the adhesion between teak decking and the rubber seal between the deck planks. 91% Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol does not appear to harm the seal and works well enough to mention for removing mold and old teak oil on boat decks. Warning! 91% Isopropyl alcohol burns very hotly with a nearly invisible flame. Do not use it while smoking or around an open flame.

TeakGuard Finish is quite safe and requires little or no precautions beyond the normal eye protection precautions. If left to dry on your skin, it will require some hard scrubbing to get it off, but it will not hurt you. Wear rubber gloves and eye production anyway. If you get TeakGuard finish on fiber glass, just wipe it off before it dries with a wet rag. Allowing it to dry before removal will make it more difficult to remove but permanent staining will still not occur. Us isopropyl alcohol as a solvent.
