Teak is an extremely durable hardwood. You betcha, that is why it was used for hundreds of years for ship hulls and decking. It didn't need to be finished because there were no finishes that would hold up in the outside environment where ship hulls and decks live. It really worked well as decking because the unprotected teak wood developed deep checking which allowed the water on the deck to be channeled out from under sailors feet and shoes so that they didn't hydroplane on the water and fall overboard. It also had to be swabbed almost daily to keep mold from growing on the unprotected wood.

Now there is now a wide variety of oils, waxes, sealers and finishes to keep teak wood from checking, turning black with mold and turning dirty gray. Unfortunately, the oils actually promote mold growth, the waxes need to be reapplied very often after first being removed. Sealers and most finishes peel off and blister and the remains need to be sanded off to restore the finish with more sealer finishes.

There is on alternative and even it needs to be reapplied yearly to maintain it integrity and beauty. It's called TeakGuard. Try it. I thing you will like it.

Teak is an extremely durable hardwood. It requires little care and no preservatives or treatment of any kind to protect it from the elements. Natural teak will gradually weather to a handsome silver gray color if left outdoors. If your teak wood products or furniture is to be used indoors, and away from a lot of natural sunlight, over a period of time -perhaps six months to a year - the wood will gradually become a darker shade of brown.
